DIY advent calendar

For several years every year I get the Pottery Barn Kids catalog and dream of the day I buy this advent calendar tree:

This year I've come across several wonderfully creative ideas for a DIY advent calendar. Some are envelopes taped to the wall in the shape of a Christmas tree, others use baby blue jean pockets to hold the candy/activity. My favorite is the one from The Crafty Chick.  So I decided I was going to be crafty and make one. I ordered the library card pockets off Amazon because I didn't happen to have any lying around.
I cut out some Christmas scrapbook paper to decorate the pockets then glued the days onto the pockets. I made some little tags in photoshop and wrote out activities for each day. Some of the days include:
  • read Christmas stories
  • drive around and look at Christmas lights
  • have popcorn and watch a Christmas movie
  • read the Christmas story from the family Bible
  • have hot chocolate
  • make a Christmas craft (several of these - each with a different craft)
Then I put it all together and hung it up in the living room above the stockings. I still need to track down some red rick-rack instead of the silver curling ribbon I used to give it more of a pop (I struck out at both stores I went to find it at today) but I wanted to get it up instead of waiting until Monday when I can head to another store.
So it's a few days into December already but I think the kids, Abby at least, will really enjoy this countdown to Christmas and she won't notice we didn't start on the 1st. It might have been up earlier but Micah had other ideas with his sleeping this week (and I had to wait on the library card pockets to get here.)
